In This Bengaluru Park, 120 CCTV Cameras To Watch Criminals, And Lovers

BENGALURU:  Central Bengaluru’s biggest lung space, Cubbon Park, is getting 120 CCTV cameras. The cameras will not be just used to keep a close watch on criminals but romancing couples as well. And as soon as the security guard scanning the CCTV camera feed at a centralised monitoring centre finds a lovebird getting what he thinks is just too close, he will pause the music being played over the loudspeakers that will dot the 197-acre estate and deliver a warning to the couple: Either keep your distance or leave the park. Moral policing? Not at all, insists SS Mallikarjun, Karnataka’s horticulture minister who heads the department that is coordinating the big upgrade that will also include installing 700 Led lights and landscaping some portions. But horticulture department officials talk about increasing complaints of indecent behaviour by some couples in a public space. We are not making them (young couples) unhappy. They can sit, talk and go,” Mahantesh ...

100 new CCTV cameras launched

The Police and Secunderabad Cantonment Board inaugurated a network of 100 CCTV cameras  in West Marredpally on Monday. The network adds to the growing body of cameras used for both policing and civic administration in the cantonment area. About a year ago, the Secunderabad Cantonment Board set out on getting communities to finance setting up CCTV cameras for security and civic administration purposes. The police joined the effort and encouraged the involvement of the community, mainly residential areas and street-facing businesses. As a result, the camera network in the North Zone, mostly comprising cantonment and the area extending about Bolarum Police Station, has over 40,000 cameras. “The camera network has helped the police crack cases and also helps us identify the cause of civic problems,” said Secunderabad Cantonment Chief Executive Officer, S.V.R. Chandrashekar. The camera network in West Marredpally costing around ₹60 lakh was financed by the Cant...

Death, drugs, and gangs: why is there so much crime in this part of Cambridge?

Two streets in Cambridge have been at the centre of organised crime, gang warfare, a killing, drug dealing and violence. Today the  News  asks why Darwin Drive and Akeman Street in Arbury have spawned such criminal activity. Calls have been made for more police on the ground in the area and for Cambridge City Councilchiefs to engage more with the community and put more resources into the streets. Police have targeted the area after a spate of disorder and have worked to bring drug dealers to justice. Just this week two drug dealers – one from Darwin Drive, another from Akeman Street – were jailed for six years for dealing cocaine and cannabis. The problems in the street in Arbury stretch back many years and a public meeting was held by residents to urge police to tackle drugs and crime – but that was in 2015. Arrests were made and patrols were increased but since then further shocking incidents have unfolded. There has been gun crime, gang warfare, drug de...

Bengaluru: SIT gets facial profile of Gauri Lankesh’s killer done

Bengaluru, Sep 21 (DHNS):  In a major breakthrough in the Gauri Lankesh murder case, the Special Investigating Team (SIT) has managed to get a facial profile of the assailant done and started a massive hunt for the man who killed Gauri. The SIT, which went through 634  digital video recorders  (DVRs), developed the image based on the footage from one of the  CCTV cameras  on the path from her office to residence. It also scrutinised  CCTV camera  footage from her house, which the assailant visited twice before the murder on September 5. “The video frames clearly show the assailant was on a Bajaj Pulsar, wearing a formal shirt and trouser (not black jacket as reported earlier), a white helmet without a visor, a wristband, a watch and office tag around his neck,” a senior police officer said. The officer said the assailant is lean built and aged between 34 to 38 years. The rough facial profile has given the SIT enough leads, it is said. “Eyew...
